Security and International Series of Sessions at SXSW 2018
The SXSW Conference includes 24 programming tracks divided amongst Interactive, Film, Music, and Convergence, presented in a variety of session formats. SXSW Convergence programming features a range of topics that straddle the cultural and technological intersection at the heart of SXSW.
For SXSW 2018, we have developed two series of sessions in the Startup & Tech Sectors Track. The International Series of Sessions will take an in-depth look at the possibilities and issues facing tech industries around the world with sessions focused on international investment opportunities, international business regulations and hurdles, innovative ecosystems within developing markets, immigration laws, media engagement in the global marketplace, and more. New for 2018, the Security Series of Sessions will explore the security landscape focusing on topics like cyberwarfare, facial recognition, smart home hacking, and food security.

How to Stay an Innovation Hub When You’re in the Dark
After a natural disaster (category 5 hurricane) ravaged Puerto Rico and its already dwindling economy, thinking about the island as an emerging innovation hub can certainly seem quixotic. However, a dire picture does not easily defeat those that use innovation and entrepreneurship as a natural reaction to hardship. In a time of complete darkness (literally), great and unrelenting entrepreneurs, a driven economic development agency, a supportive tech startup network and a reinvigorated global accelerator can hold the fort and put an otherwise obliterated ecosystem on the map, yet again.
Singapore: The Digital Capital of Asia
Digital capital. Durian central. Disneyland with the death penalty. Whatever you want to call it, Singapore is one of the world’s most anomalous nations and economies - and now, fueled by the latest and greatest in tech, our ambitions are only growing.
Join us for a whirlwind introduction to the country’s digital agenda, and to find out why the world of tech, from startups to unicorns, VCs to AVs, hackers to hipsters, is coming together in Singapore.
LatAm Corporate VC & Accelerators: Are They Working?
In the era of corporations being disrupted by startups across every industry, every major company in Latin America is looking to respond leveraging various strategies. Collaborating with startups using an open innovation approach is one of the widest used strategies to bring innovation into a corporation.
However, few efforts have been successful in Mexico and Latin America, mainly due to cultural clashes between entrepreneurs and executives. Learn from the trenches of working with some of the major corporations in the world on how to make successful this approach and hear from entrepreneurs that have signed global agreements with major corporations.
This panel is an effort to bring real-life learning to give entrepreneurs a glimpse on the corporate accelerators and corporate venture capital and give executives from different companies an idea on how to bring startup innovation into their business core.

Who’s Really in Control of Self-Driving Cars?
A few years back, I hacked the Tesla Model S. Scary, right? Actually, it’s not as scary as it seems. In this session, I’ll discuss the current state of automotive security as I see it and give a deep dive discussion on where security needs to be moving forward. I’ll discuss the steps needed to hack a car, the cars that are most vulnerable, the security of self-driving cars, and how concerned consumers can protect themselves.
Millennial Security in the Digital Age
This presentation is an informative look at how millennials can keep the private information they covet so dearly safe in the age of ubiquitous social media use. With so many profiles and platforms to manage, navigating the social media sphere is more difficult than ever.
Hacking Wetware: A History of Social Engineering
Most security incidents today start with social engineering, attacks on people, not machines. With stories and experiences from three decades in security and espionage, Lance explores how people and culture have always been cyber security’s front line. Using tales of personalities and exploits, Lance shows how security is primarily a cultural challenge rather than a technological problem. Participants will take away insights into better security that apply to their own lives and organizations.
