Play Differently with Richie Hawtin Interview at SXSW Music 2016

"For me DJing isn't just playing a great record after another – music is the base of it, but it's what you do to that music that defines you as an artist [and] as a DJ." - Richie Hawtin

On the eve of unveiling of his new mixer, Richie Hawtin, iconic techno DJ, producer, and record label-owner, talked about the evolution of the modern-day artist and DJ with Andrew Ryce, North American Editor of Resident Advisor, at the 2016 SXSW Music Conference.

Hawtin shares his love of digital DJing, finding interesting combinations between the analog and digital worlds as well as his experience as a techno DJ. The discussion dives into the evolution of artist involvement in the electronic music scene, where he's seen that convenience has begun to out weigh creativity. Hawtin voices the importance of DJ artists to find the perfect balance of tech tools and bringing your own unique sound forward.

Hawtin also talks about his new PLAYdifferently line of mixers, which he has developed in partnership with Andy Rigby-Jones. The first instrument, which was unveiled last week on BoilerRoom.tv, a six-channel analog professional mixer called MODEL 1. It features two stereo Send & Return channels, two Mix outputs, Master & Booth EQ, and six full featured stereo channels.
