Since 1976, Richard Hoover has combined the time honored tradition of master violin making and bench style guitar building with a team concept. The Santa Cruz Guitar Company was the first to present boutique guitars handmade by a small team of luthiers to the steel string, acoustic marketplace. They were the breakout from the large, established manufacturers, setting the precedent for the boutique guitar niche. They haven’t strayed since, creating the finest sounding handmade acoustics in the world. Presently, Richard and his dedicated team of a dozen luthiers are making the most sophisticated instruments of their kind, using responsibly harvested, old-growth tone woods. To ensure consistent harmony, sustain and sophistication of complex tone, the guitars are hand voiced and tuned, built in strict climate control for stability and crafted with the experience of professional repair technicians for easy maintenance. Dovetail neck joints and Nitro-cellulose finishes are just some of the more time consuming practices Santa Cruz Guitar Company employs over cost effective factory techniques to ensure heirloom quality and superior, consistent sound. SCGC is a bona fide custom shop, with over 60% of their guitars being custom orders. Whether it’s a nut width or neck profile, specialized tone woods, overlays and bindings, or extensive inlays, Santa Cruz Guitar Company does it all.
