The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) looks at the Mississippi Music Trails as a museum without walls, taking visitors on a musical history journey through Mississippi. MDA works directly with the Mississippi Blues Commission and the Mississippi Country Music Trail Commission to implement a plan which is designed to attract tourists, conferences, music performances, filmmakers and others for the purpose of economic development of all geographic areas of the state. As one of the most unique heritage preservation projects in the country, the Trails officially honors the remarkable contributions made by the state's blues and country music artists in the development of modern world music and the role that historic places and sites have played in the development of both of these music genres.
Today, the Trails consist of more than 188 unique historic markers across the state and beyond, a comprehensive website, detailed maps and supporting highway directional. The Trails has also embraced the latest technology with a series of films that can be accessed at remote locations using smartphone technology and with the development of the Mississippi Blues Trail mobile app, which is now available for download for Apple and Android users.
