This week on the Chronolog, Chase Hoffberger and Kevin Curtin of the Austin Chronicle fill you in on how to make the most of your weekend by getting a jumpstart on celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with awesome music. The Chronolog specialty show on SXSWfm will be previewing music from some of the artists that are honoring MLK at various events around the city of Austin.
On Sunday evening, January 19th, the 3rd annual MLK tribute show, All Rise, will take place at the North Door and is welcome to all ages*. The event will include performances by Riders Against the Storm (RAS), Bavu Blakes, Queen Deelah, David Sha, DJ Chorizo Funk and more.
Chaka Mpeanaji of RAS, the rap duo who organizes the annual All Rise event, tells the Austin Chronicle, "We were a little tired of the 'I have a dream' King that's always blasted on airwaves in January. Our events focus on the anti-imperial, poor people's campaign King that revisionists don't want people to remember.”
Also on Sunday night, Austin Mic Exchange's MLK Day Block Party will take place at Spiderhouse*. This event not only features live music from League of Extraordinary Gz and other acts, but also graffiti artists and breakdancers.
To be in the know of what music to check out in Austin, make sure to tune in to the Chronolog today on the 6's & 12's (CST) only on SXSWfm. Stream us here on your mobile device or desktop!
*All Rise has a $5 cover charge per person
*MLK Day Block Party is an 18+ event with a cover charge
