Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival celebrated its fifth year this past weekend, August 9-11, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. The impressive lineup included SXSW alumni and Backbeat artists the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wavves, Wild Belle, and Surfer Blood, who will return to Austin this October to perform at Red 7.
Also on the lineup was a Backbeat favorite, The Growlers, a beachy lo-fi garage rock band hailing from Dana Point, California. The most notable thing from their Outside Lands performance was their unique stage set up that was comprised of several eight-foot-tall plywood slabs custom painted to create a giant loteria deck.
Another Backbeat band to have graced the Outside Lands stages was Kurt Vile and the Violators, who helped to close out the weekend with a Sunday performance that included their newest member, drummer Vince Nudo of stoner rock band Priestess. They'll also be returning to Austin on August 20th for a performance at Mohawk.
Many of the festival's memorable performances were made viewable for non-attendees online via UStream. If you still managed to miss the live feed, you can check out the footage in the Performance Gallery here.
You can catch all of the aforementioned artists on The Backbeat, SXSWfm's rock specialty show hosted by Jessica Pickett. Tune in every Tuesday at 6am, noon, 6pm and midnight CDT, as well as Saturdays at 11pm CDT, to hear the best rock music to have graced the SXSW stages.
