SXSW 2014 Artist: Banks

Written by Tayla Ridley

For Banks, writing music during her adolescence was a way to cope with loneliness. Now 25, Banks channels her vulnerability to craft lyrics that sting you with the utmost honesty.

Jillian Banks, who goes by Banks, is a sultry singer-songwriter from Los Angeles. Her music is an enchanting blend of dark electropop and R&B with a progressively layered sound. Last year, Banks released her first EP Fall Over, followed by her London EP. Both EPs feature cutting edge production from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Jamie Woon, and Sohn.

Despite being known as an artist who alludes to a certain mysteriousness and detachment from the media, Banks is already being positioned as one of 2014’s breakthrough artists by numerous media outlets including Shazam, iTunes, Spin, and Spotify. Gaining notable recognition after her song “Waiting Game” was featured in a Victoria Secret’s holiday commercial and landing an opening slot for The Weeknd’s international tour, Banks, according to Billboard, is “being touted as a magnetic writer with songs to obsess over.”

Banks will be performing at SXSW on Tuesday, March 11 at midnight during the Harvest Records showcase.
