SXSW Staff Picks: Austin Psych Fest 2014 (Part 2)

Austin Psych Fest 2014

The 7th annual Austin Psych Fest is right around the corner, taking place this weekend, May 2nd-4th, at it's newest home at Carson Creek Ranch. As an Austin transplant coming up on my third year of residency, I have attended APF twice and am more ecstatic for the lineup this year than ever before. My first time attending in 2012, the fest took place in between the Riverside Emo's and Antone's locations and then was moved out to Carson Creek last year, which fits the overall vibe of APF impeccably. Thus, I'm very excited to return to that same location this year.

Narrowing down my top picks this year is a tough one! I have a not-so-secret fantasy that The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols will put their beef aside and join one another on-stage for an epic jam sesh (after which I can die happy), but that is probably incredibly far-fetched.

Outside of my wild dream I am above and beyond excited to see Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson's side project Moon Duo who tend to play mostly overseas. Stoner rockers Dead Meadow are also high on my list as I unfortunately missed their last show in Austin when it hit capacity in the blink of an eye.

I've got some awesome international bands on my radar as well:

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's album Float Along - Fill Your Lungs is one of my favorites right now; they'll be visiting us from Australia. Berlin-based 70's doom rock inspired group Kadavar is also one not to miss. And last but certainly not least, Brazil's Boogarins, whose debut SXSW showcases, despite my best efforts, I inevitably missed this past event.

I'll also be very much looking forward to throwing on my dancin' shoes for both Gap Dream and Shannon & the Clams!
