This year’s Americana Music Association showcase at SXSW is part of the Pandora Discovery Den series at The Gatsby (708 E 6th St). Each night features a different genre of music and each night’s showcase will be live streamed on Pandora, including a stellar lineup of Americana talent on Friday, March 14.
The night kicks off with the legendary Wanda Jackson, “The First Lady of Rockabilly and America's first female Rock and Roll singer.” Wanda was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Next up, the Texas duo Sons of Fathers. Known for their spot on harmonies and spirited live shows, Sons of Fathers released their second album Burning Days last year.
Hurray for the Riff Raff is also set to perform at the AMA showcase. Alynda Lee Segarra and her band have been receiving rave reviews for their new album Small Town Heroes. They’ll be followed by singer-songwriter-producer-author-and-AMA board member Rodney Crowell, introducing songs from his new album Tarpaper Sky, to be released later this spring. Rodney shared Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year honors at the 2013 AMA Honors and Awards show last fall for Old Yellow Moon.
Lucinda Williams, an AMA Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and the 1999 SXSW Music Keynote, will follow Rodney. “Lu” has been touring in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her landmark, self-titled album on Rough Trade. And capping the night is Austin’s own Shakey Graves (Alejandro RoseGarcia), who has been building quite a following with his one-man-band performances and lo-fi recordings.
