“What you spend years building someone could destroy overnight: build anyway.” According to the band’s biography, this quote by Mother Teresa inspired The Rocketboys, who will be headlining SXSWfm’s HAAM Benefit Day Showcase, to forge on as a band after a great deal of setbacks.
In many ways, The Rocketboys have undergone a transformation since they formed in 2005. Although the indie rock band seems to be enjoying a period of relative harmony, that wasn’t always the case. The band was originally called Homer Hiccolm & the Rocketboys when they formed in Abilene, Texas back in 2005. They changed their name to The Rocketboys and have since relocated to Austin, but about half of the original band members left over the past few years. The band decided against calling it quits and created a critically-acclaimed album, 2012’s Build Anyway.
A review of Build Anyway by Paste Magazine applauds the album and concludes by saying, “Is it self-serious? Frequently. Lovely? Consistently. Road trip-ready? Definitely.” A review published on ByVolume.co.uk states that its “ballads almost feel like rock songs and its rock songs hold tight to melody, making the album as a whole phenomenally tight and consistent.” Build Anyway is a must-listen if you haven’t heard it already.
The Rocketboys will be taking a break from writing a new album to headline the HAAM Benefit Day Showcase presented by SXSWfm next Tuesday, September 24th, at Wooldridge Square Park in downtown Austin! There will be a silent auction during the event and attendees will have a chance to win SXSW 2014 Music wristbands, 3-day ACL passes, The Rocketboy’s merchandise, and more! Miller Lite will be providing beer and Austin Pure Water Treatment will be providing purified water, so be sure to bring your reusable water container. You can find all of the info here.
