English producer and electronic musician Andy Stott twists the knobs like nobody's business. His throbbing beats will send you into an afternoon trance that leave you staring out the window wondering why the sky just turned bluer… how the cars are suddenly racing down the street in time to the sounds.

Stott has released three albums on Modern Love and scads of EPs. The prolific gent brings his clever melodies to our shores on Wednesday, March 13 at Elysium.

Featured Song: "Tessellate" by Alt-J

2013 SXSW Showcasing Band Alt-J

The word tessellate refers to how different shapes fit together to create a larger pattern; Alt-J’s interpretation doesn’t shy away from this definition. Each instrument brings a different shape to the table to form a larger piece. The song starts with a piano intro followed by the drum machine, but it’s the bass line that grabs you and sets the tone. The other instruments fall in line with the bass and vocals to form a musical pattern that is absolutely serene, perfect for watching the sun come up. In November, Alt-J won a Mercury Prize for their debut album An Awesome Wave, an incredible and well-deserved achievement for such a young band.

Featured Album: Hummingbird by Local Natives

2013 SXSW Showcasing Band Local Natives

Passion, emotion, and soul are three words that come to mind after listening to one minute of the Local Natives’s recently released album Hummingbird. The production is fantastic and it enables the instruments to collectively create a unified sound that is just clean, crisp, and clear – like going to the lake on a warm spring day in Austin. In an age where streaming and downloading single songs is becoming the norm, Hummingbird reminds us that the album still has a place in this industry. Subtle changes in texture and song structure throughout are more than enough to keep you engaged. This is great musical storytelling.
