The ongoing battle for online privacy has emerged as one of the most prominent themes for the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival. Investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald (author of the soon-to-be-released book “No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State”) will speak at the event on Monday, March 10. Moreover, last week we announced that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will participate in a satellite interview with Benjamin Palmer of the Barbarian Group on Saturday, March 8. Additionally, the SXSW Interactive extended workshop program will include a two-and-a-half-hour session titled “After Snowden: Privacy, Surveillance, & the NSA”.
Today we reveal another session focused on this topic, “Snowden 2.0: A Field Report From the NSA Archives.” This session will feature Barton Gellman (pictured at left) of the Century Foundation, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on Vice President Dick Cheney. Gellman is one of three reporters entrusted by Edward Snowden last May with top secret NSA archives. In December 2013, he was the first to interview Snowden face-to-face in Moscow. Nine months after breaking the PRISM story in The Washington Post, Gellman looks back at what we have learned, what it means, and what we still don't know. Snowden gave birth to an insurgency against the surveillance-industrial state. A counterinsurgency rose to defend the status quo. Gellman offers an insider's view of who is winning and why.
Interviewing Gellman at SXSW Interactive will be a Cory Doctorow (pictured at right), a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger. Doctorow is the co-editor of Boing Boing and the author of young adult novels like Homeland, Pirate Cinema and Little Brother and novels for adults like Rapture of the Nerds and Makers. A Keynote Speaker at the 2002 SXSW Interactive Festival, he is the former European director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, Doctorow now lives in London
The “Snowden 2.0: A Field Report From the NSA Archives” session will happen on Monday, March 10 at 9:30 am. Find the sessions that you most want to attend at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival by browsing the day-by-day, hour-by-hour schedule.
