YouTube Treats: Japanther
Japanther packs a punch. These Brooklyn art-school grads take a creative approach to a two-man band and have been called the curators of "bedroom-pop blast." Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly have a do-it-yourself style that showcases a fine balance between art project and concept band.
Japanther builds a hazy, lo-fi musical experiment from distorted cassette tape and Casio samples, punk-fueled drumbeats, fuzzed-out bass chords, and chanted chorus lines shouted into microphones fashioned from repurposed telephone receivers. It's a sight to see. SXSW is excited to have Japanther play the Submerged Showcase on Thursday, March 18th at Buffalo Billiards.
Japanther's video for "Radical Businessman" showcases their rambunctious, steady, pop-punk beat that refuses to let you stand still. Their live show guarantees to pull you onto the dance floor. Within no time you'll be bobbing and cheers-ing to new friends, singing in unison. Believe me, I know. It's a common side effect.
Japanther's style is drenched in fun-focused rebellion. Their "let's get real" attitude merges traditional garage-punk with an eclectic combo of RZA-esque samples, minimal instrumentation and a raw, child-like enthusiasm. Japanther manage to maintain an innocence-as-honesty attitude while screaming an anti-authority protest. Japanther's revolution advocates playground priorities and self-asserting anthems, which makes their sound easily accessible and the experience just plain fun.
