The LP Questionnaire/Pick Three - David Wingo of Ola Podrida
It's been a couple years since a co-worker first played Ola Podrida for me. At first I laughed because Olla Podrida is a market in Dallas that I used to go to when I was a kid... then I was entranced and enchanted by the dulcet tones of David Wingo, and I encourage all y'all to run straight to St. David's Bethel Hall on Saturday night at midnight to get swept away with the magical sweetness.
Speaking of the Olla Podrida, apparently Wingo's first public performance involved him dressing up as a mouse at said market. I'm told, "The job didn't last, but it did lead to his first beer (thrown at him by some unruly hecklers in a truck) and to his unforgettable pseudonym, Ola Podrida."
Despite what he considers to be good dental hygiene, David still gets more cavities than a grown man has any right to. He has never been punched in the face.
Also, err, he's decided that age 34 is where he puts into practice his belief that showering any more than every three days when it's not summertime is wholly unnecessary. He said, "A little bit of B.O. never killed anybody...wait a minute, does this make me a hippie?" I think I wont, you know, answer that.
Instead I'll happily give you his version of...
The LP Questionnaire
Name: David Wingo
Pro Wrestling Name: The name generator said Triple Cobra was my wrestler name but I prefer Dancin' Dave Wingo...my gimmick is that I'm a really good dancer.
1. Pretend you’re 15. Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for your girlfriend. 1990...I was still a couple of years away from having a girlfriend, but my three songs would have probably been "Just Like Heaven," "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," and "Bizarre Love Triangle. I know those seem like the songs a girlfriend would put on a mixtape for her boyfriend and not the other way around, but I was kind of a wuss...
2. Which evil villain would make the best President? Solomon Grundy
3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Scooby Doo
4. What superpower do you wish you had? Underwater breathing/super-spelling
5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Are You Gonna Eat That?
Pick Three
Tacks, The Boy Disaster: Easily one of my favorite Austin bands of the last several years, I still give their EP they put out a few years ago a ton of play and their live show is just as good, if not better.
Carsick Cars: Amazing band from Beijing, they sound to me like a cross between early Sonic Youth, The Clean, and The Wedding Present. They have excited me maybe more than any other band from the last couple of years, I can't believe I'm gonna finally have the chance to see them live.
Camper Van Beethoven: They were one of my first favorite bands and they completely exceeded my expectations when I got to see them for the first time a couple of years ago...the 15-year old inside of me will be freaking out like the giddy nerd that he is.
Now is the time of year when the LPQ/P3's come fast and furious-like, and I'll be back later today with Matthew Mayfield and Past Lives. Let the good times roll, evybody! I've done more about others and you can read those paragraphs here if you are so inclined. Me, I'm going to sit around and obsessively listen to Ola Podrida all day... true story.
