The LP Questionnaire/Pick Three - Jesse Dangerously

Jesse Dangerously_0026.jpgBelieve it or not there's another LP here at SXSW (imposter!), and when my pal MW suggested I ask a nice boy from the Nerdcore panel to do my fun features I went to her because she suggested MC Frontalot last year and that worked out rather well so here we are.

Now the proof is in the pudding, peeps. Check that photo. Jesse Dangerously is a mesmerizing force to be reckoned with.

Mr. Dangerously (really Mr. McDonald but Mr. D is more fun to write) is finishing a self-produced record called Humble & Brilliant that he says is "half fun times and half heartbreaking. If I've done my job right, that is."

He used to be the best person he knew at Dr. Mario but has since been eclipsed... by a girl... who beats him at it every time they hang out. He owns around 3,000 vinyl records, half of which are hip-hop.

Chuck D once judged a rap contest where JD placed second. First prize was $5,000. Second was a sweatshirt.. that he got in the mail. In 2000 he recorded a track in 5/4 time, a difficult feat for a rapper. He challenges anyone to do better.

Dangerously is serious about feminism. His best feature is his forearms.

In addition to his show at Karma Lounge on Wednesday, March 17, you can also catch him on the Nerdcore 101 panel that very afternoon at Ye Olde ACC.

To prep for these events, I suggest you have a gander at his...

The LP Questionnaire
Name: Rap Legend Jesse Dangerously
Pro Wrestling Name: Elegant Apples (I used the pink version for ladies)

1. Pretend you’re 15. Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. If I'm fifteen, it's 1994 or 95, and I have access to all the best hip-hop that will ever be recorded because it just happened over the course of the preceding seven years. I think that if I had made a mixtape for a girl that year, I would have totally failed to make it in any way romantic or appealing to her. I would have just tried to show her how great hardcore hip-hop is, and hoped she'd be really touched by a playlist containing "Time's Up" by OC, "1-800-SUICIDE" by Gravediggaz, and "Nod Factor" by Mad Skillz. If I made a girl a tape today from the music I had access to then, it would be much sweeter. I hope.

2. Which evil villain would make the best President? I'm not entirely sold on the commonly trumpeted benefits of evil villains in positions of great federal influence, but so as not to be a spoilsport I'll play along. Dr Doom's a fairly benevolent leader when it comes to Latveria, isn't he? His foreign policy leaves something to be desired, to be sure, but that's hardly a dealbreaker in these enlightened times. I guess I have no stones to throw (Doom - Stone's Throw - get it? Indie rap humour!), given that Canada is presently at the mercy of our own evil villain in the form of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He has entirely depleted the nation's stores of smug self-congratulation, and left us a hollow mess. Damn his villainy.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? The REAL Ghostbusters, for two reasons. One is that they had the audacity to put the word REAL right in the name, all caps, specifically because the movie stole its title in the first place from an older cartoon by Hanna-Barbera. The other is that at the beginning, end, and action-packed climax of every single episode, they played at least thirty seconds of the Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker Jr and that is probably the best, toughest, most exciting song anyone has ever recorded in the history of all music. Sorry, Huey Lewis - that's the news.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? I get into enough trouble with the superpowers I DO have! Who needs more responsibility? I'm fine with superrappin' and prestidigitation, and if I need any new powers it isn't super ones, it's normal ones like making phone calls on time and not forgetting things always.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? I can't tell you the title, but I'd hope to have it ghostwritten by Tristan Taormino. And maybe Pharoah Monche, in places.

Pick Three
Sage Francis: Big homie and big inspiration of mine for almost exactly a decade now, since he used to come to Halifax (where I grew up) to play shows with Buck 65 and Sixtoo. His label showcase was the highlight of SXSW 2009 for me, and I'm very excited for his forthcoming record, and basically I'm always checking for opportunities to see him perform since he stopped coming to Canada some time ago.

Themselves : I was heartbroken to miss them last year, since their "theFREEhoudini" mixtape was blowing up my headphones at that exact moment and lead MC Dose One was kicking his most hip-hop verses in a decade and the music is just incredible psychedelic post-rap boom bap landscapes. Now their third full-length is out and I'm in love with it and I've never seen them play and it feels like, after twelve years of distant jocking, it's time for me to lay eyes and ears on what I've heard is a magnificent live performance. It's hard to stay committed, though, because they're playing at the exact same time as The Cool Kids, whom I love, and (irony of ironies) their own erstwhile labelmate/labelhead Sole... but I have to just swallow my tongue and make this pilgrimage. It's time.

Kimya Dawson: I was introduced to her music about four years ago by the woman who would eventually become my main partner in crime, and I got really attached to her album Remember That I Love You and the song "I Like Giants" makes me cry every single time I hear it, when it gets to the part about the lemmings, and if I saw her perform that live or even "Rollercoaster" or the one about how her mom needs the voices to stop I think my heart would explode out of my chest in such a display of fireworks and sparklers and marching band parades that everyone within five meters of me would forget the top five meanest things ever said to them in their lives and ride a hot unicorn to a land of hugs and forgiving and friends for evermore. Like a Carebear Stare that gets everwhere.

This might be one of my fave Pick Threes ever. We are thankin' ya for stopping by today. TGIF and all that good stuff even though Friday is just like Monday or Marmalade or Marmaduke around here. I shall return later with a drive time Pick Three from Nic Adler. If you're just sitting around looking for something to do, you can read the rest of posts with the mosts here.

We are "tweeting" about "things" @sxsw and @mspark. If you prefer communication of the +140 character variety, please email tree kangaroos to musicblog@sxsw.com.

I had to figure out which SXSW this is for me this morning. Twenty-two was the number. Bleargh... I will be a fossil soon.

Maybe they'll put me in a museum, lp
