Chilean Music Showcase Featuring Anita Tijoux

Chile_post225px.jpgThe Chilean rap all-star known as Anita Tijoux will be at SXSW this year to give us a taste of her new album 1977 as headliner for the Chilean Music Showcase presented by Plutopia Productions.

This album, named for her year of birth, paints us a picture of her beginnings in France and pays homage to the early 90s era of hip-hop that got her into rapping as a teenager in Chile. Having gained recognition as an MC for various rap groups in Chile during the late 90s, Tijoux has also taken time to explore other areas of music beyond underground hip-hop, and her duet with Julieta Venegas “Eres Para Mi” became a radio hit. She continues to prove her abilities as a true “rapera” through her cunning and sophisticated lyrics shown off through her hypnotic, jazzy voice and dynamic beats.

Joining her on the showcase will be Funky C, a Latin Funk and hip-hop foursome who has shared the stage with Anita many times and is one of Chile’s premier hip-hop acts. This being the festival’s first showcase dedicated to Chilean music, the bill will include other Chile-based groups like The Ganjas, who’s psychedelic prog-rock style has garnered them critical acclaim since their 2001 debut and a loyal fan base that keeps them busy touring all over Chile. Brit-pop group Casino and indie rockers Intimate Stranger will also perform as representation of the European influence that makes so much of Chile’s music unique from other Latin countries, along with special guests Capsula from Spain who will add their own 60s garage sound to the show. Be sure to check out this culmination of modern Chilean music at Maggie Mae’s on Saturday night, March 20th.

Register now to catch Anita Tijoux and be sure to keep an eye on the SXSW Schedule as we continue to add more showcasing acts, speakers, and events for SXSW 2010!
