The LP Questionnaire/Pick Three - Phil Hadfield of Cut Off Your Hands

cut_off_your_hands.jpgDarling Kiwis turned Londoners Cut Off Your Hands bring their dynamic and thoroughly catchy popness to the shores of SXSW. With three plays at this year's fest, you have no excuse not to see them, right?

We all know I favor the bass players (or maybe not, but you will soon. oh wait, now you do), so I was super pleased that Phil Hadfield, whose name means "lover of horses," took the time to do The LP Questionnaire and Pick Three.

Prepare to be entertained, people!

Name: Phil Hadfield
Pro Wrestling Name: Crazy Hercules

1. Pretend you’re 15. Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. It’s 1998 and I’m a nerdy white boy, but all the other kids on my block are into R n’B, and who can blame them? I tell my friend I like this girl and then he tells her friend and then her friends tell her and we go out for two days. Although it was a short time and we only held hands once and I kissed her on the cheek and the mouth one time respectively, some strong emotions were stirred up. I express these emotions through the gutwrenching emotion of these songs. I like to think that some of Nick’s songs, like "Oh Girl," channel this stuff. Go on, read the lyrics and imagine Usher singing them. Oh yeah, it works. Here’s the songs, anyway.
"I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men
"All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo
"You Make Me Wanna" by Usher

2. Which evil villain would make the best President? Fantastic Four arch-nemesis Dr Doom. He’s evil, sure, but more than anything, he wants to be a truly great man, so he won’t stop at anything, even doing the right thing, if it makes him go down in history as a great leader. Maybe he’d lead you to war but you know you’d win. I think he’d be really good, but it could go either way y’know?

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Pepé Le Pew – it’s such a great cartoon of misguided, unrequited love. Though I think he would have been so good to that cat he mistook for a skunk. In fact, I think that cat was the one true love of his life, and I hope they’re together and happy somewhere today.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? I wish I was bonded to an alien symbiote that gifted me super strength and a huge mouth to bite off peoples’ heads and adamantium-coated bone claws and the ability to teleport while making the sound “bamf” and powerful pheromones. The power is just all in the alien symbiote, incredibly, so it all counts as one. Oh yeah, it drives me insane too.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? (B)ASS MAN

PICK THREE
Black Lips: Looking forward to checking out Black Lips. When they first started getting big I was always hearing crazy stories about them pissing on each other and all sorts of stuff. I’m not sure what to believe, but if they play a good set of songs with those great swampy guitar tones it’ll be a bonus cause their new stuff kills. Mostly just hoping they get their dicks out though.

The Tallest Man on Earth: A little on the quieter side I really wanna see The Tallest Man On Earth. No, not Robert Pershing Wadlow, he died in 1940 and required 12 pallbearers to carry him, I’m talking about the singer-songwriter. Sure, it’s pretty much just like listening to early Bob Dylan, but the songs are great and they’re filled with rich imagery and soul. There’s not a lot of singer-songwriters I’d wanna see, but I could see this being interesting.

Department of Eagles: Grizzly Bear are great y’know, but seeing as I’m not on acid right now, I’m way more excited about Department of Eagles. You take the atmosphere of the former and place it in much more of a ‘song’ context, with rad production and beautiful harmonies that bleed together to make it sound something like Beck fronting the Beach Boys, which can only be amazing.

So that pretty much ranks right up there or takes the cake, that autobio title. Toldja you'd be entertained. Speaking of entertained, you can read a whole honey bunches of posts on other fabulous SXSW 2009 artists like Margaret Cho, Marco Benevento, Brendan Harney from Wheat, Janeane Garofalo, and more if you click here.
