Emerging Visions: Introducing "Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be The Same"

Our Emerging Visions interviews keep on coming. This time it's the turn of Jody Lee Lipes, director of Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be The Same.

Could you tell us a little about your film?

Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be The Same is a verite love story about an artist and his girlfriend trying to make it together. The artist, Brock Enright, is given an opportunity to take his career to the next level by having a career defining solo show at a prominent gallery in NYC. The pressure and expectations are high, and his struggle to create affects everyone around him. It's kind of a family drama that happens to be about an artist.

How do you think your film will stand out at SXSW 2009?

I'm a DP by trade, and because of my visual and technical sensibilities as a filmmaker, this movie somehow defies the verite tradition. The film is almost entirely locked off on a tripod, and very composed, so even though it is strictly verite, I think it owes more to a narrative visual tradition. Because of the way it was shot, it has an objective, standoffish feeling, but the story is incredibly intimate because of the total access I was granted by Brock and his girlfriend Kirsten. Combining those two elements definitely creates a unique tone for this story, something that I've never seen before.

What are you most looking forward to at SXSW?

Watching Brock deal with questions from the audience. I think people are going to have a preconceived notion of him after watching the film, and I think he will surprise everyone.
