Our friends at Balcones Recycling worked hard this year to make SXSW a cleaner event than ever before. With the help of trained janitorial crews they diverted tens of thousands of pounds of waste from the landfill by collecting recycling and compost at three major SXSW locations. Auditorium Shores (65% diversion), South Bites Food Court (87% diversion), and Brush Square Park (48% diversion) all showed impressive results especially for our first year working with Balcones. We are confident that next year will be even better!
After SXSW came to a close the SXSW Sustainability Team was given a tour of the Balcones Recycling facility in Austin. Not only was it educational but we had a blast hamming it up amongst the piles of amazingly well organized trash that was heading out of Austin to begin new lives, and get recycled into new materials. It was a visual feast and as it turns out Balcones Recycling also sees the potential in other people's trash and is presenting a "found object art show" to benefit ecoRise.
Come see what the artists (including SXSW Eco Programmer, the fabulous Ms. Leslie Uppinghouse stir up out of the found objects of other people's trash. The show is this Saturday, June 1st at 7pm at the Pump Project (702 Shady Ln.) with beer from (512) brewing and featuring live graffiti and live music. All are welcome!
