SXSW Housing Changes for 2013

The first day of SXSW 2013 online registration and hotel booking saw unprecedented response from people all over the world. We are thrilled by everyone’s excitement about attending SXSW Interactive, Film and Music in March!

There are still thousands of great rooms available available, but the flood of hotel requests resulted in many sold-out hotels in downtown Austin during Film & Interactive dates. If your preferred SXSW hotel is sold out you may be asking yourself, “what now?”

In order to help attendees book hotels for SXSW 2013 quickly and easily, we have simplified the hotel wait-list policy. Hotel wait-lists will only be available for people without a pre-existing reservation. This means is that attendees will no longer be able to book a “safety room” and wait-list for a “better room.”

This change will result in shorter lists and include the folks who really need accommodations. This will also decrease the number of “backup plan” rooms booked and then canceled too late to be matched up with attendees who could have used the room.

The wait-lists will be shorter, but being on a wait list does not guarantee a room. So rather than take the risk of not getting a room, we recommend you find a good property on our list of available hotels (many have shuttles available), buy your badge and make your hotel request right away!

However, there will be guests who get lucky with the waiting list and registrants who want to go that route should email their hotel choice and dates for their stay to housing@sxsw.com asking to be put on the wait-list.
