Mexico is joining the fold with a bigger presence this year. SXSW, in conjunction with Bonus Creative, held a networking and mentoring event in Mexico City on January 22.
SXSW Music 2013 Showcasing Band El Cuarteto De Nos
Uruguay, given its geographical and historical context, is a breeding ground of genre blends and many sounds. This year, SXSW brings to the stage seven acts that exemplify this phenomenon.
On the bill is Candombe-specialist Daniel ‘Tatita’ Marquez and tango ‘cantante’ Malena Muyala. Both bring to Austin their interpretations of traditional sounds overlaid with reimagined, contemporary ones. Bonafide singer-songwriter Franny Glass emphasises vibrant storytelling over an indie-acoustic feel. Max Capote, with his tremolo guitar and trademark raspy voice, finally makes his U.S. debut here at SXSW. Capote is upfront with his blends as he mixes hard rock with a funky beat and jazz bridges between tropical rhythms. And adding big star power is multi-award winning, arena-filling band El Cuarteto De Nos to join the mix. The band’s played some 20 plus years now and they still hold on to that same signature wit and solid composition that has defined the act from day one.
