SXSW Music 2013 will feature hundreds of the music industry's most influential and notable figures, discussing the most important issues in the business. This is your chance to meet some of our esteemed panelists!
Here's a quick interview with 2013 Music panelist Nick Sabine, Founder/Director of Resident Advisor, first time attendee of South by Southwest. Be sure to check out his panel, Brands Are Music Fans Too, Not Just Pots Of Cash this March!
Number of times you've attended SXSW:
What are you most looking forward to at SXSW:
Meeting new people, forging new relationships, unearthing amazing artists and music.
Briefly, what is your panel about, and why should we go to your panel?
The panel I'm speaking on looks at the relationship 'Brands' have with the music industry and how some fairly simple rules can help brands avoid wasting time and money on ineffective partnerships, or worse, damage their reputation with the exact audience they are trying to engage and drive a favrouble response from.
What's the most important issue in music today?
The saturation of formula based 'commercial' music within mainstream society. It stifles creativity and limits the opportunities for the wider world to be exposed to new music. When dollars directly - negatively in every sense apart from the bottom line - influence the creative approach of some of the worlds most popular artists it renders them little more than mouthpieces for the corporate record label juggernaught. Music is a form of art and expression, not a lowest common denominator commodity.
What was your first job in the music industry?
Lowly paid internship at a record label. EG: Making tea, sorting promo CDs and stacking vinyl for external delivery.
Any tips for first-time attendees?
As its my first time, I'm not exactly qualified to give any advice. I can, however, pass on the few pearls of wisdom that have cropped up when I've been asking regular SXSW'ers:
(1) Make sure you get a room in the Hilton. Check!
(2) Pace yourself, its a long week. Do what you will with this advice, I intend to ignore it entirely.
(3) Find a local to advise you on the best places to eat during the week. Check!
(4) It Resident Advisor are doing a showcase, be there. We are. On Wednesday. So Check!
