I've never been to Australia. Or New Zealand. I've always wanted to, but especially after a chance encounter with a Flying Nun Records compilation in my teens. Most people have cultural tropes tied to their idea of the countries, but the incredible culture that emanates from the continent isn't limited to Mad Max, AC/DC, and Flight of the Conchords (and the differences go much deeper than this hilarious scene).
Those willing to pay attention will find a deep tradition of amazing rock & roll and folk from the region, and this March, Stuart Coupe (Laughing Outlaw Records) led an examination of the musical successes and troubles that bands have encountered from this relatively isolated region. Joining Stuart were music writer Ian Sheddon (The Australian), broadcaster/journalist/singer Emma Swift, musician Simon Baeyertz, and esteemed rock writer David Fricke (Rolling Stone).
