The way Belle and Sebastian lead singer Stuart Murdoch broke into the film world seems very fitting, knowing his background as a musician. God Help The Girl, Murdoch’s directorial debut, is a coming-of-age story that doubles as an indie-pop musical. In fact, the singer began writing the songs that would later evolve into the full-length film nearly a decade ago.
Prior to the God Help The Girl screening at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival, Murdoch stopped by the Austin Convention Center for a live interview at the SXSW Music Conference. During the interview, Murdoch and interviewer Jason Cohen (Texas Monthly) discuss the film, Belle and Sebastian’s plans for 2014, and the difference between directing a film and fronting a band.
