SXSW 2014 Music Speaker: Caroline Bottomley

Very briefly, what do you do and what is your session about?

I'm the managing director of Radar. We're a network of over 10,000 music video directors worldwide and we help labels and artists commission great music videos from new talent. Our session is about how to understand and make the best of your music videos on YouTube. We'll be looking at the hottest new approaches to promotion and revenue generation, with some of the leading business talent in that arena.

How/why did you get started in the music industry?

My first job was designing posters for this really cool venue that had just opened in Sheffield, UK. It was / is a lifestyle choice.

How many years have you attended/spoke at SXSW in the past? If this is your first time at SXSW, what are you expecting?

I came for the first time last year, on a recce.

Best thing that’s happened in music in the last year?

Video! It's moved right to the centre of the music conversation. Hurrah!

Favorite new app/service/tech development in music?

Lots of things I like, none particularly new, sorry! (YouTube, Spotify. Can't wait for better connected-TV)

What’s the biggest issue facing the music business today? Can it be overcome?

Discovery. I don't know but playlists certainly look like the way forward.

What’s the last live show you saw that floored you?

Queens of The Stone Age were ace at The Roundhouse last year. But my fave recent music experience was at a little house music club in Amsterdam at ADE.

Favorite moment/weirdest thing you saw from a past SXSW?

I loved the afternoon I took a bike, with cyclist and his resident dog, out to a venue on the edge of town. I watched some metal (which I don't usually watch), whilst having a beer and I found out what a Frito pie was - unexpected but delicious.

What artist(s) are you most looking forward to seeing perform at SXSW 2014?

I'll be going to watch artists I've never heard of, so I don't have to queue. I bet at least one of them will be great.

Tacos or BBQ?

Tacos (see Frito Pie experience above).
