What better way to kick off your weekend than with a little bit of hip hop? Today's Four on the Floor profiles four hip hop duos invited to perform at the SXSW 2014 Music Festival. Some of these guys have been together for a long time, and some are still developing their sound - but all of these duos have proven that they deserve the recognition and exposure that comes with performing at SXSW.
Natives of Austin, Texas armed with slick Southern flow, V.I.P have been at it since 1999. While they’ve had plenty of local and regional buzz over the years, the duo of KPaul and Pimpin Pen have only recently started getting well-deserved national attention. Look for V.I.P to break out some new music at SXSW in March - the pair is set to release a new album, Country Cousins, this April.
RIYL: UGK, 8 Ball & MJG
Hip hop fans have been waiting a long time for this one! ST 2 Lettaz and Clova, members of hip hop duo G-Side, announced their reunion back in November after a two year break and will be bringing their UGK-influenced sounds to SXSW 2014. The rap duo from Huntsville, Alabama started rapping together in 1999 but didn’t break through until they released Huntsville International in 2009, garnering praise from the likes of NPR, Pitchfork, and HipHopDX.
RIYL: Outkast, Freddie Gibbs
This rap duo originating from Dallas, Texas is young in every sense of the word. At just 21 years old, childhood friends B. Reed and Lil Faime make up one of the top up-and-coming hip hop acts out there right now, Yung Nation. The two rappers keep feeding their quickly-growing fan base with new material, releasing two brand new mixtapes this past November.
RIYL: Beat King, Migos
Consisting of rappers Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy, A.Dd+ have taken it upon themselves to change the outsider perception of Dallas hip hop - and it’s working. A.Dd+ moves effortlessly between street topics, societal issues, and personal stories, and paints detailed lyrical pictures over a diverse array of high quality beats. Look no further than the duo’s most recent mixtape, DiveHiFlyLo, for evidence.
RIYL: Outkast, Cee Lo
