In many ways, Funk Volume is the result of Ruthless Records, the label started by Eazy-E in 1987. After a falling out with Ruthless in 2009, rapper Hopsin decided to follow his own path and established Funk Volume with his friend Damien Ritter later that year. The label continues to steadily grow - Funk Volume currently has four rappers on its roster that are as talented as they are active. Look for all four of these guys at the SXSW 2014 Music Festival.
Los Angeles-based rapper Hopsin wears many hats; he’s the founder of Funk Volume in addition to being a producer, director, and actor. Since starting Funk Volume in 2009, he’s put out three studio albums, released an EP with Travis Barker, and gone through hundreds of pairs of colored eye contacts.
RIYL: Eminem, Odd Future
SwizZz was the second artist to come onboard Funk Volume, kicking things off by collaborating on a mixtape with Hopsin (Haywire) in June 2009. SwizZz - influenced by all sorts of music, from 2pac to Taking Back Sunday - is set to issue his debut studio album in 2014.
RIYL: Tech N9ne, Rittz
A native of Sin City and the youngest member of the label, Dizzy Wright signed on as the third Funk Volume artist in 2012. The rapper wasted no time, putting out his debut studio album, a mixtape, and an EP that year. Wright has already made some noise on the Billboard charts and, with a new album on the way, it appears he’s set for a big year in 2014.
RIYL: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Royce Da 5'9"
The fourth - but certainly not final - rapper signed to Hopsin’s label, Jarren Benton is proof that Funk Volume represents acts diverse in style and location. Hailing from Decatur, Georgia, Benton released his studio debut, My Grandma’s Basement, last June. The rapper will be on the road with Tech N9ne and Freddie Gibbs this spring.
RIYL: Brotha Lynch Hung, Yelawolf
