We covered four up-and-coming bands traveling to the fest from Canada earlier in the season. But there’s just so much amazing talent coming from north of the (US) border, we didn’t feel like previewing only four bands did the Canadian music scene justice. Hell, highlighting eight Canadian SXSW 2014 Showcasing Artists isn’t enough to truly showcase musical diversity and skill of these promising young acts.
Lend your ears to the far out, lo-fi electronic sounds of Calvin Love, who makes good use of delayed guitars against colorful synth backdrops. The producer and songwriter hails from Edmonton, Alberta and released his first album, New Radar, in 2012.
RIYL: Gap Dream, Wild Nothing
Crank the bass up for this one! Churning out a bouncier electronic sound than his fellow countryman above, Kaytranada cleanly threads hip hop and R&B elements throughout his beats. The Montreal, Quebec-based DJ put out his first full-length album, Kaytra Todo, last year.
RIYL: Lunice, Ryan Hemsworth
Perhaps showing the incredible diversity of the Montreal music scene, the rough, punk rock intensity of Solids contrasts sharply with the smooth beats of Kaytranada above. The band’s perfect combination of heavily-distorted guitars and pounding drums creates a solid wall of sound prevalent all the way through their newly released debut album, Blame Confusion.
RIYL: Yuck, Crystal Antlers
We’re completing Four on the Floor’s journey across Canada with Tory Lanez, a rapper from Toronto, Ontario who lets his quick and precise flow loose over booming, high quality production song after song. The young rapper has recently collaborated with Meek Mill, Kirko Bangz, and Dizzy Wright, as well as released a mixtape, Conflicts Of My Soul.
RIYL: Drake, Kirko Bangz
