Four on the Floor: Bands from Brooklyn

Written by Rory Burbeck | January 8, 2014

Now that we’ve announced more than 1,000 bands for the SXSW 2014 Music Festival, you can expect plenty more Four on the Floor preview posts between now and March. Today, we’re focusing on a city with an extraordinarily rich musical heritage: Brooklyn, New York. With genres ranging from rock to pop to hip hop and much more, Brooklyn has always been a hotspot for incredible music, new and old. These are just a few of the many bands that will be traveling from Brooklyn to Austin this March. Enjoy!

SPIRES

After receiving rave reviews at the CMJ Music Marathon this past fall, Spires are ready to bring it to SXSW in the spring. Spires has only been an active band for a little over a year, which is remarkable considering that they've perfected '60s psychedelic pop meets '90s UK baggy to a T.
RIYL: Olivia Tremor Control, Candy Flip, The Beatles

GHXST

Whether you want to call them “doom grunge” or “noise pop,” GHXST has an undeniably infectious sound complete with droning guitars and wonderfully dissonant vocals. Sentimentalist Magazine has hailed their live performance, calling GHXST “New York’s most stylish noise pop trio.” The band should have new material in tow when they make their return to SXSW.
RIYL: Sonic Youth, Royal Trux, The Jesus & Mary Chain

WET

Another incredible young band from Brooklyn, Wet provides a nice change of pace from the noisier bands in this post. Those of you looking for a succinct and tranquil pop sound at the SXSW 2014 Music Festival need to put this trio on your schedule. In addition to surprisingly developed tunes, Wet is armed with a good sense of humor - visit their website above and you’ll see why.
RIYL: The xx, How To Dress Well, Rhye

SOUL KHAN

We can’t preview SXSW artists from Brooklyn without including a little bit of hip hop! A member of hip hop collective Brown Bag Allstars, Soul Khan strongly conveys his Brooklyn heritage in every aspect of his music - whether it be with his deep voice, New York accent, or beats that at times evoke thoughts of Big L. His flow and freestyle are stellar - you can listen for yourself below or on his SoundCloud page.
RIYL: Atmosphere, Gang Starr
