The Zombies at SXSW 2013

Our friends at Austin Psych Fest announced their initial 2014 lineup earlier this week. This Austin-based festival is always a favorite among the SXSW staff, but we have even more reason to be excited this year based on the partially announced lineup. Austin Psych Fest 2014 will include a ton of SXSW alumni bands like The Horrors, Moon Duo, Primal Scream, The Black Angels, Of Montreal, and Circuit Des Yeux - but one headliner has our undivided attention: The Zombies.

At SXSW 2013, Austin Psych Fest and Yahoo! teamed up to produce a showcase at Brazos Hall that featured a rare appearance by The Zombies - one of the first psychedelic rock bands. The legendary British band, which still features original members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, disbanded in 1967 but reunited in the early 2000s and have been touring on-and-off since. In addition to showcasing at SXSW 2013, Blunstone and Argent also sat down for an interview with NPR's Bob Boilen during the Music Conference. Footage of the interview is provided below.

The Zombies’ appearance at Austin Psych Fest’s SXSW 2013 showcase was surrounded by a ton of excitement from those attending the festival - old and new fans alike. A.V. Club published a rave review of their set at Brazos Hall: “They sounded good, period...and [seemed] genuinely touched by such an enthusiastic response roughly 50 years after their formation.” The band posted this statement on their website following the performance: “What a wonderful audience for our final Austin, Texas show...Our first SXSW was a chaotic but truly rewarding experience.”

The Zombies are making a highly-anticipated return to Austin this spring for Austin Psych Fest 2014, happening May 2 - May 4 2014. Check out the rest of the lineup here. You can also see some of these announced artists at SXSW 2014.
