SXSW Alumni The Civil Wars Hit #1

The agony and the ecstasy. It's a bit of a heartbreaking tale, really. Nashville duo The Civil Wars put together a rich record full of the darkened, emotional country songs that made them one of the darlings of SXSW just two short years ago. Now, one canceled tour later, John Paul White and Joy Williams are no longer speaking and the band is on "hiatus" as their album knocked Robin Thicke off the top of Billboard's Top 200 chart.

Perhaps with the critical and commercial success of their eponymous album, the pair can find a way back to each other and the fans who are clamoring for more.

Here they are in happier times performing "Barton Hollow" at the IFC Crossroads House at SXSW 2011.
