For today’s Four on the Floor, we’re taking you into America’s heartland, the Midwest. A region known for its heavy industry and agriculture, the area is also known for its rock and folk music - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland, Ohio after all. Sit back and discover just a few of the great Midwest artists that you’ll see at SXSW 2014.
Searching for an organic classic rock sound? Well, you’ve found it. Buffalo Killers started in 2006 after the breakup of Three Shams. Since their formation, these rockers from Cincinnati, Ohio have worked with Dan Auerbach, been on tour with The Black Crowes, and garnered tons of media support. Their most recent album, Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., was released in 2012.
RIYL: Led Zeppelin, Black Pistol Fire
Like the aforementioned Buffalo Killers, Communist Daughter came together after the dissolution of another band, Friends Like These. This similarity in the way these bands were formed does not carry over into the group’s sound, however. With a serene, nonchalant tone, this indie rock band from Saint Paul, Minnesota provides a perfect soundtrack for kicking back and relaxing after a long day. Borrowing their name from a Neutral Milk Hotel tune, Communist Daughter is slated to make their first appearance at SXSW this March.
RIYL: Cloud Cult, Chris Bathgate
Known for utilizing a wide variety of instruments, including acoustic and electric guitars, slide guitars, banjos, violins, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar, The Giving Tree Band embodies a true Americana sound. This band from Yorkville, Illinois seamlessly integrates rock, blues, country, and folk into their music, and has deservedly received a ton of positive press attention. As you will be able to tell from the featured song, the band maintains an incredibly tight live sound, so don’t miss these guys at SXSW!
RIYL: The Wood Brothers, The Band
Saintseneca is another band from the Midwest that makes use of a wide array of instruments, yet they also impeccably blend more modern synthesizer and electric guitar sounds to produce a balanced and energetic folk-rock tone. Recently signed to ANTI-, this Columbus, Ohio band is gaining steam: Saintseneca was named one of “CMJ 2013’s 10 Best Discoveries” by Rolling Stone and will be appearing at their first SXSW this spring.
RIYL: Lord Huron, Maps & Atlases
