Combing through the list of announced SXSW 2014 Showcasing Artists, you might have noticed that there are plenty of bands whose names refer to different animals - certainly more than four. In light of this, we’ve decided to pick four announced bands with animal names and highlight them on today’s Four on the Floor. Despite this similarity in nomenclature, these artists come from all different parts of the world and vary significantly in style.
Fauntella Crow combines beautiful vocal harmonies with a balanced mix of piano and violin. The result is a soothing folk sound that doesn’t get old - the diversity between songs, which sometimes include guitar and a drum machine, is more than enough to keep the listener engaged. The two members both have interesting individual backgrounds: Sunday Lane (piano) is a classically-trained musician and Jessy Greene (violin) was part of Dave Grohl’s “Sound City Players” tour.
RIYL: Bon Iver, Samantha Crain
With a sound described by The 405 as “delightfully muffled,” this rock trio from Madrid, Spain will be performing at their first official SXSW showcase this coming March. The Parrots are defined by their garage rock tone, call-and-response vocals, and lo-fi production that only enhances the listening experience. These guys have already received a ton of positive press coverage for only having released one EP, entitled Aden Arabie.
RIYL: The Strokes, The Vaccines
Dune Rats’ music could be interpreted as surf/stoner pop that totes a blatant punk rock attitude. This trio hailing from Brisbane, Australia are clearly making music on their own terms - and having a damn good time doing it. Dune Rats have released four EPs since their inception and rumor has it that they’re planning to put out their debut full-length album in the early part of 2014, possibly just prior to SXSW in March.
RIYL: Tijuana Panthers, Bass Drum of Death
Julian Lennon isn’t the only descendant of John Lennon coming to SXSW - Sean Lennon (Julian’s half brother) will be bringing his band, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, to the SXSW Music Festival in 2014. The avant-garde folk band, comprised of Lennon and his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl, combines wonderful vocal harmonies with psychedelic elements for a sound reminiscent of 60s rock. The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger recently toured with The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala.
RIYL: Timber Timbre, The Lumiñanas
Keep up with the list of showcasing artists here. Four on the Floor will resume in January. Happy Holidays!
