Created by stacey on March 7, 2013

Natalie MainesSXSW Music is excited to announce the solo performance debut by Natalie Maines. Best known as the front woman for the multi-platinum, Grammy winning band Dixie Chicks, Maines will premiere her highly anticipated material from her upcoming album, Mother. The record will be a rock-leaning collection, featuring original music written by Maines as well as songs by artists ranging from Pink Floyd to Jeff Buckley. In an emailed announcement, Superstar Maines stated "Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important." Mother is scheduled for release May 7, 2013. Maines will share the stage with Iron + Wine, Dawes and more.

The LP Questionnaire/Pick Three - Louis B. Falgoust of Goatwhore

When I queried my metal pals about who to check out at this year's fest one name showed up on everyone's list. And that name was Goatwhore.

Hailing from New Orleans, the band's legacy, spawned from the ashes of Acid Bath, Crowbar, and Soilent Green, is rich, and the music dark and gritty. With song titles like "Reckoning of the Soul Made Godless" and albums called Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun it seems pretty clear these guys are no pretty boy pop-metal act (though a couple of them, I have to admit, appear to be purty cute).

Lovelife - "Your New Beloved": SXSW 2013 Showcasing Artist

Made up of Ally Young and Lee Newell, Lovelife formed after the duo met with a stroke of strange symmetry, in the midst of failed relationships and freshly cut projects. Finding a mutual inspiration and resilience the duo were offered the unlikely opportunity of relocating to New York; giving them the chance to write and create music in a new and inspirational environment.

Third Root x DJ Chicken George - "So Beautiful": SXSW 2013 Showcasing Artist

Third Root is a hip-hop collaborative based out of San Antonio, Texas that focuses on fusions among Black and Chicana/o culture and identity. Third Root consists of hip-hop music artists and writers Charles Peters (Easy Lee of Mojoe) and Marco Cervantes (Mexican Stepgrandfather). In June 2012, they released the full length LP, Stand For Something and continued with a follow up project, Mind Elevation Mixtape, mixed completely by Third Root's DJ Chicken George.

The Linus Pauling Quartet - "Crom": SXSW 2013 Showcasing Artist

Since the mid 90s, The Linus Pauling Quartet has been playing their particular brand of Texas stoner metal/garage psych infused with their obsessions for drugs, beer, sci-fi/fantasy, and the mighty Bongs of Power. Over the years, they've appeared at multiple SXSW and Terrastock festivals, contributed tracks on several psych compilations and singles, and recorded 8 full-length studio albums - the most recent of which, "Bag of Hammers", is perhaps the heaviest thing they have ever released into the wild.

Here is how some others would describe them:

Stereo Mike - "O Alos Babis": SXSW 2013 Showcasing Artist
