Oh Myyy! We can’t believe how excited we are to announce that this year, 2014, is the year that the SXSW Interactive Festival will “boldly go where no one has ever gone before.” On Tuesday, March 11, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm, SXSW will officially be the coolest place on the planet. If you are not in Ballroom D of the Austin Convention Center on Stardate -309190.46, you will miss out on “Oh Myyy! A Conversation with George Takei.”
In 2013 SXSW Interactive had the privilege of hosting Star Trek: The Next Generation alum LeVar Burton for his session “100 Year Starship: Interstellar Travel & Beyond”. And now this year Interactive will go “original” with the actor who brought Starship Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu to such fantastic life, the unstoppable George Takei. I think we can all identify with the alter-ego that Sulu embraced in the historic Star Trek: Original Series season one episode, “The Naked Time.”
With a career spanning five decades, George Takei may be known around the world for his founding role in the acclaimed television series Star Trek, but through the years, Takei’s influence has spread from the far reaches of the galaxy to the far reaches of the web. As the host of the new AARP-produced YouTube series, “Takei’s Take,” Takei explores technology trends and popular culture topics. AARP announced today that “Takei’s Take,” will start production on the second season right here in Austin during SXSW. AARP partners with Fullscreen on the production of this original online program.
“I can think of no better place to launch our new season of Takei’s Take than at SXSW Interactive, where the most creative and tech savvy players in the business converge. I’m thrilled to be among those presenting this year,” said Takei.
In 2012, Mashable.com reported that Takei was the #1 most-influential person on Facebook, which is no surprise considering his more than six million likes on Facebook and over one million followers on Twitter. With two new books released in 2013, a starring role in a Broadway-bound a musical inspired by his childhood incarceration in a Japanese American internment camp, and a documentary about his life and career set for release later this year, this actor, online content curator and author has a lot to talk about.
Takei will be joined on stage by Matthew Segal, president and co-founder of OurTime.org. Matthew is a frequent TV commentator and has appeared on The TODAY Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, and the CBS Evening News among several other cable and broadcast news programs.
Tuesday is convergence day at SXSW, so all badges are welcome to join us in Ballroom D on Level 4 of the Austin Convention Center on Tuesday, March 11, at 12:30 PM, to catch up with pioneering trekker George Takei as he shares with us his many projects through space and time. Takei will be doing a book signing directly following his talk, from 1:40-2:00 PM, at the SX Bookstore in the Ballroom D foyer.
