Welcome to SXSW Eco Forward, where we take a look at what initiatives past SXSW Eco speakers and organizations are working on now. Today, we are highlighting 2013 opening remarks speaker Ron Finley and last year's winner of the Startup Showcase in the Greentech Category, Blue River Technology.

Ron Finley

Ron Finley, who gave an energizing opening remarks address at SXSW Eco last year, was recently featured in LA Weekly and honored as one of the most fascinating Angelenos in the outlet's People 2014 issue. Ron has been recognized internationally (he has spoken everywhere from New Zealand to Qatar) for "guerilla gardening," transforming urban landscapes and seemingly inhospitable areas into lush, overflowing food gardens. Last year Ron inspired SXSW Eco attendees with his passion for (and success in) bringing healthy, organic food to the inner city. Food systems is again one of our session themes for SXSW Eco this year.

Blue River Technology

Blue River Technology, winner of the 2013 SXSW Eco Startup Showcase in the Greentech category, recently announced that it has closed a $10 million Series A-1 funding round, led by Data Collective Venture Capital — topping up a $3.1 million Series A it raised back in 2012. The startup is a pioneer in the use of computer vision and robotics as an alternative to chemical-intensive agriculture that is both costly and harmful to the environment.

Register to attend SXSW Eco 2014 to join in on all the exciting programming happening this October. Stay tuned for more announcements coming soon!
