Re+Public – sponsored by Qualcomm Vuforia and IEEE – launched their first original content, augmented reality mural at SXSW 2014. This ambitious project combines a 2D wheat paste mural with a 3D animated and interactive digital experience that quite literally brings their urban art to life. Pretty cool, huh?
A creative collaboration between The Heavy Projects (Los Angeles) and PublicAdCampaign (New York City), Re+Public employs emerging technologies to alter the current expectations of urban media and accomplish their core mission of "re+imagining" public space.
This initiative reflects the goal of SXSW Eco's own public space design competition, Place by Design. Designing better places is a crucial component of cultivating sustainable development and lifestyles. Place by Design honors visionary design work that achieves positive community impact through the creation or re-imagining of public spaces, like Re+Public's interactive artworks.
Using the Re+Public mobile app (iOS / Android), users can participate in public space by interacting with the mural and engaging its conceptual narrative. Currently, Austin and Perth are the two host cities of the digital murals. It may sound like a "see it to believe it" piece, so if you are unable to view it in these cities you can see it here in all of its augmented reality glory and then believe it when you test it yourself here.
