Early-risers on the second-day of the 2013 SXSW Interactive Festival were treated to an outstanding conversation about innovative thinking between Russian-born VC Yuri Milner and Vanity Fair Contributing Editor Bethany McLean.
A 1985 graduate in physics from Moscow State University, Milner then came to the US and attended the Wharton School MBA program. By 1999, he had begun investing in Internet companies. Ten years later, he launched DST Global as the primary vehicle for his international Internet investments. Under Milner's leadership, DST Global has invested in startups such as Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, Twitter, and (more recently) Coursera. He is also the founder of the Fundamental Physics Prize and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, both of which provide strong financial incentives for outstanding science-based discovery.
Meanwhile, McLean is the author of two hard-hitting investigative books: "The Smartest Guys in the Room" (which tackled the 2001 Enron crisis) and "All the Devils Are Here" (which tackled the 2008 banking crisis). She has appeared on numerous television shows ranging from the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
