Press and Media: Industry Trends in SXSW PanelPicker

Check out all the journalism proposals in the PanelPicker

This week marks an exciting start for our community: the public voting stage of the SXSW PanelPicker officially opened! Voting continues through the end of the day on Friday, September 6.

What does this mean to you as press? Not only does your vote and opinion matter in the decision-making process for SXSW programming (public voting accounts for 30% of the overall decision), but we also use PanelPicker as a barometer of predicting industry trends and topics in March.

As the Publicist for SXSW Interactive, I enjoy scouring through PanelPicker proposals to gauge what topics your industry deems as timely and important to discuss at SXSW. Of the 3,000 proposals we received this year, 323 of these were tagged as journalism, content, press and news. (The theme with the most entries goes to "Entrepreneurism and Business" with 590 proposals).

The future of print is wildly popular amongst your colleagues. And no real surprise, especially after Jeff Bezos' much buzzed about acquisition of The Washington Post. Some take the stance that print is dead, while others oppose and are optimistic that reinventing the wheel will lead to profits. Weigh in with your thoughts and vote for who you want to speak on these topics at SXSW 2014.

If you haven't already, we encourage you to submit your press application to cover the 2014 SXSW Interactive, Film and Music festivals as soon as possible. While we will accept applications through February 5, 2014, waiting that long may mean less desirable hotel options for you. Also, save this helpful timeline for your records.
