2014 SXSW Interactive Awards: Categories

The SXSW Interactive Awards highlight the newest / freshest / most innovative trends, products and developments in the new media industry. We re looking for apps, campaigns, kiosks/installations, location-based services, networks, platforms and websites that push the boundaries of what we know. So, every year we update the competition to reflect this mission. Here are the categories for the 2014 event:

Activism: Green, governmental and non-profit projects striving to make the world a better place.

Amusement: Humor, memes, games and all the interesting stuff that is weird for the sake of weird.

Art: Interactive collections of life, society and culture.

Business: Devoted to the promotional needs, functions and services of for-profit businesses.

Classic: While the SXSW Interactive Awards focus on the best new experiences, this category honors projects that launched before January 1, 2013.

Community: Projects changing the way we connect and interact with each other.

Educational Resource: From elementary school learning to advanced technology-related tips, these projects help you learn.

Experimental: Cutting-edge and trend-setting works pushing the envelope and challenging our perceptions of what’s possible.

Film/TV: Projects featuring streaming video content or information about movies, TV series, actors and the film industry. This category is unrelated to the SXSW Film Festival or the SXSW Film Awards.

Motion Graphics: Animations, cartoons, and other intriguing works built using tools like Adobe Flash and HTML5.

Music: Projects related to musicians, bands, and the music industry, as well online radio and other developments that offer streaming audio content.

Personal: Blogs, portfolios, pet projects and personal collections of individuals displaying their work and passions.

Social Media: Users, campaigns and platforms creatively connecting and sharing experiences.

Student: Projects from student designers refreshing this industry with new talent and ideas.

Technical Achievement: Projects reinventing and redefining the technical parameters of our digital experience.

Digital Campaign of the Year: The best interactive campaign from the 2013 calendar year as voted by our judges.

Best of Show: The judges' favorite finalist from the 2014 competition.
