Presenting at the SXSW Interactive Festival often leads to exciting new career opportunities. Such is the case with Cory Booker, who earned the honor of Best Speaker at the 2013 event after his amazing on-stage interview with Time's Steve Snyder at the Long Center.
He authored the best-selling book "Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything" as well as the followup volume "Macrowikinomics: Rebooting Business and the World."
At the 2013 SXSW Interactive Festival, internationally acclaimed big-picture visionary Don Tapscott covered the concept of Global Solution Networks, which he says can provide non-traditional approaches to problems such as climate change, conflict, poverty, water scarcity, infectious disease and economic stagnation. Good things have been happening - and quickly - for the Glaswegian trio known as Chvrches. The band has only been together for two years and their full length debut album won't be released until September at the earliest. But on the strength of a few singles and an EP called Recover, Chvrches have been enjoying a series of sold out club dates in their first full U.S. tour. Field Day in London and Sasquatch in Washington state were their first big festivals, but there are many more on their summer schedule.
Recipients of the first Grulke Prize for Developing International Act at SXSW this year, Chvrches returned to Austin last week for a sold out show at The Mohawk. Kevin Connor spent time with the band's Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty discussing their music, the quest for BBQ, and their cheerily obsessive love of Prince. It's hard not to love the Jim James for he is a lovely, lovely dude.
He's been touring in support of his first solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God and if you haven't picked that goodness up, they are some highly recommended musics. He's also got this band called My Morning Jacket who are about to go on tour with Bob Dylan and Wilco.
